Henninger Flats Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

ab6ui: Due to the heavy rains in 2005 the trail (Mt Wilson Toll road) to Henniger flats was washed out and is currently still closed. The Henninger Flats campground and Ranger station are also closed. It is due to this fact that I have been unable to replace the cache. I hope that when the trail reopens I will be able to place another cache in the area.

Geocache Description:

9/8/04 UPDATE: I Just received another e-mail from the Ranger at Henninger Flats. " We had a volunteer group doing a service project for us when the cache was discovered and inadvertantly destroyed during some brush cleanup and repair along the nature trail." I plan to hike up there soon and replace the cache & contents. AB6UI

BSA Troop 996 went to Henninger Flats to work on our Wilderness Survival merit badge and while there decided to place a cache near where we spent the night in our "natural shelter" The path is up the old Mount Wilson Toll Road, now a fire road. Round trip distance is approximately 6 miles with 1700' elevation gain. It's a wide, well-graded dirt road and the terrain difficulty given is primarily for distance with elevation gain.

Henninger Flats is a lush oasis on the old Mt. Wilson toll road. Not only is there a campground with tables, restrooms, clean water and cooking grills, free fire wood but a great little museum, as well. LA county also maintains an experimental nursery here where research is done on reforestation techniques. Overnight camping is free but you must make a reservation.
The cache is a small clear "Tupperware" container with a purple lid and is located off the old nature trail.
