Updat 12-31-05:
This cache has fallen into disrepair and may even gave been removed by someone. I will upgrade it in the spring. Sorry for any disappointments. Stay tuned.
Update: 9-6-05
Never fear, shipmates, this Son of Neptune'll be a-servicin' his treasure trove with a new cache of pilfered booty for your tomb-raidin' inclinations. LAter this month I'll be fixin' up the old cache with better trasure chest, fer sure, and a revised and more challenging natural route-finding addition. Once again, lemme say that the GPS coordinates vary in accuracy and my original fix was in heavy foliage wih no external antenna. My GPS is old and has a 3% error, but that makes for a better hunt. Read all the posts for a better chance.
Arrrggh!
UPDATE 5-17-04: Coderdude should have looked in the logbook more closely...there are more clues to greater TREA$URE$!
UPDATE: 4-17-04GPS coordinates have variations, evidently. My Lowrance tooke me back to the exact spot. It was a super beautiful day that I kayaked out to the island to service the cache and arrived there just after BIO-X. That would have been a surprise meeting. NEW NEWS: This is now a new and improved cache with a SPECIAL BIG BONUS for the hardy. Besides the dollar bill hidden in the cracks of the toes of the sphinx. There are added secrets to be discovered. There is a road that goes around this island. Your powers of observation need to be good. I can't give away much, but plan to spend the day and please replace all clues for the next guy/gal. Ultimate rewards are better than usual. Don't be greedy. One item per person only to avoid the Pirate's Curse! Happy Hunting!
Original Entries:\Ok, Gang, This is a good one. This cache is on a large forested island on beautiful, clear and clean Beaver Lake in NW Arkansas. The island is located East of Lost Bridge Public access near the dam and is almost a mile long and a hundred feet tall. I embarqued in the Folbot Kodiak kayak from Lost Bridge South Park and paddled to the island where I circumnavigated it and chose the SE end because the beach wasn't too rocky and a good landing could be made there. Also there was a little and rare flat spot in a copse of trees just big enough for my 2man tent to stay the night. I hauled the gear and boat into the brush. Hiking about 50 yds more or less up the moderately steep hill through the red cedar woods, Westerly doing light brush wacking, I came to a curious-looking rock formation and some barbed-wire grown into a tree. A kind of a mini-bluff is here, well below the ridge top. It reminded me of the toes of the Great Sphinx but with two, side-by-side rounded overhanging thin limestone ledges about 8 feet up. Centered roughly in the gap at the base between the two ledges, there grows an 8 inch diameter tree slanting to the East. There, in a depression beneath a sizeable stack of rocks, is the treasure cache in a 4" dia x 6" Tupper-ware tub.Its location is:N 36 24' 14"W 93 51' 34"It contains:1. Over 1 yard of 99.9% laboratory pure silver ribbon one inch wide. Maybe an ounce in weight.2. Odd Selection of Miscellaneous photographs3. Pair of Dice4. Extra Large Jingle Bell (Bear Protection)5. NEW Bar of Soap from Grand Canyon Lodge6. Lotus Elise Hotwheel car7. 6 Costa Rican Colones Coinage8. Smokey The Bear Lucky Campfire Coin9. 12AX7 New Old Stock New In Box Antique Guitar or Audiophile Pre-Amp Tube10. New "Swiss Army" Knife11. A Note From me and a pencilPlease take an item and leave an item in its place as well as a short message on the paper. Some of the rocks are quite heavy so please take care in replacing them as to keep animals out. There is possibly a black bear on this island, but he is not too big. I need to find a metal container to replace this cache when I maintain it.Of course, feel free to improve this one by bringing a small metal waterproof container, but you will have to do some digging if its bigger than a 16 oz peanut butter jar. The difficulty level is deceiving since a boat or strong swimming is required but its really not hard to get to. For maximum enjoyment, sail or paddle to this uninhabited island and stay the night...it's a great lake. I re-visited the cache the weekend before Thanksgiving in 2003 and had a tough paddle of it with 25 mph & South winds, 60 degrees and whitecaps. I camped the night and the next day I got my timbers shivered as the temperature dropped 30 degrees in an hour the next morning and the 25mph wind had shifted to the North as a headwind again! Frost formed on my mustang suit and Little Dog Annie. I found the cache in good shape and actually hid some CASH MONEY and a clue in the cracks of the Toes of the Sphinx. I wish I could have taken up the one offer from a local cash finder noted in the Pirate's Log there to have a Toddy on the way home, but I was just too cold and tired from the ordeal. I'll be back in April, probably the weekend of the 17th. Thanks to all for the interest. I am going to put some really good surprises in on my next visit.
