How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

This is a two-stage multi-cache. Both legs of the cache are accessible from public sidewalks, suitable for the whole family. Parking is the most difficult aspect. The walk between the two cache segments is a half-mile or less. However, it is in a very high-traffic urban location and has a history of being stolen. In order for this cache to remain intact for any length of time, please be as discreet as possible when searching for it.

Urban Legend tells that a Mr. William Sianis, owner of the famous "Billy Goat Tavern" in Chicago, frequently brought his pet goat Murphy to this location for baseball games. Sianis would have two tickets -- one for himself, and one for his goat on a rope, and they would both enjoy the lake breeze, ivy-covered walls, and jovial atmosphere inside during Chicago Cubs games.

However, all that changed during the 1945 World Series. The Cubs were leading the Series 2-1 over the Detroit Tigers. Sianis purchased two tickets to the fourth game, played in Chicago, and attempted to gain entry with his goat, but was rebuffed. Goats were no longer allowed. Sianis, quite angry at this sudden change of policy, left without seeing the game. He was so upset that he put a curse on the Cubs. So long as his goat was not allowed inside, the team would never win a World Series again! The team lost 3 out of the remaining 4 games in that World Series, and haven't been back to the World Series since. In fact, they haven't won the World Series since 1908.

Attempts have been made to lift this 'curse.' One of Sianis' heirs has given his blessing to this place. On occasion, other goats have been invited into the park to make amends. Folks have paraded goats around the outside of the park. A goat has been brought to at least one other Major League ballpark in attempt to transfer the curse. Despite these efforts, the infamous Cubs have yet to win it all. Many Cub fans disregard the curse, however, and believe the Cubs' best is yet to come.

To find the cache, go to the posted coordinates, which may very well be where Sianis raised his fists in anger, cursing the Cubs on a long-past October day. Observe the large red neon sign over your head.

How many flagpoles are near (left and right of) the sign? (exclude those on the roof!) X = __
Directly below the red neon sign is a single line of windows (disregard ticket windows). How many windows in this line are directly beneath the sign? Y = __
Divide Y by 2. Z = __

Final coordinates:
N 41 5X.8YY
W 087 39.08Z

You may wish to bring your own writing implement, as the tiny stub of pencil we’ve provided is awkward to use.
