This is in a location that is off the BR Parkway. you will have to hike 1.46 miles on the Big Butt trail. The cache is at the summit of Point Misery. This is an area that during hunting season, you should wear bright color clothing. It's about a 650ft elevation change. Trail is in good condition and easy to follow. The Cache is a Large Green Ammo Box.. hopefully Bear proof this time...Elevation is by GPS 5719 ft.
There are two ways to approach this cache. Best is from the BR Parkway at the parking cords N35-44.904' W82-20.031'
The other is a bit long, but for the best in health and want an adventure, park at Cane River Gap on US 197N of north of Baranardsville, or South of Burnsville, NC. Cords are N35-48.615' W82-20.913'. I recommend the BR Parkway unless you have all day. It's 6.5 miles from Balsam Gap on the Parkway to Cane River Gap with some of the most beautiful terrain you will ever see. During hunting season, please wear bright clothing. This area is hunted frequently for bear an deer. You never know which critter you will encounter, so be prepared. The Cords given is for the Boundry Marker on Point Misery. First find the boundry marker. It is a steel pipe in the ground at the base of a large beech tree painted with red all around.
After you find this cache, if you have time, follow the Big Butt trail down to Little Butt mtn. It is beautiful and the views are great. The climb up Little Butt is not difficult and the trail is marked good. You might even want to climb Big Butt and see the benchmark there. The view from Big Butt is block by the small scrubby trees there, but still worth the hike. If you hustle, like I did, and be wore out when you get there, my best time was 38 minutes. Please take your time and enjoy the woods. This trail runs along the boundry of the Wilson Boundry... approximately 1000 acers of posted land in Yancey County and the Colman Boundry.. US Forest Service (North Carolina Game Lands) in Buncombe County. The Parkway is closed during winter, but if you want, you can still access it from Cane River Gap. Spring and Fall here is beautiful. Lots of color in the fall. In the spring.. if you like Ramps.. nuff said..
This cache will be accessable from April, depending on weather until December 30 after hunting season closes.
