Geocache Description:

Find the Brambergdenkmal (looks like a giant pepperpot) and nearby is a cache.

At the Brambergdenkmal (635m) you can pic-nic or make a bar-b-que. On 21st June 1339 the Bernese army defeated the Nobels. Nearby the monument you can find a cache.

The Bernese army comprising soldiers from Oberhasle, Simmental, Weissenburg and the Wald cities fought the Burgundy partners from Basel, Lausanne, Gruyère, Nidau and Neuenburg. The Bernese army had to march for 2 hours to reach the battle ground above Neuenegg at Bramberg. On the way they stopped at “Cheese and Bread” or Chäs and Brot for refreshment. This and the earlier Battle of Morgarten (1315) established the reputation of Swiss soldiers because relatively poorly armed and protected Bernese defeated heavily armoured cavalry. Swiss fought in a deep phalanx, Macedonian style. The pikes of four ranks of pikemen were projected beyond the first rank. As one fell, another moved up to take his place. This approach was successful until the introduction of artillery.

This battle was the first time the Swiss cross (white cross on red background) was used in Battle.
