Welcome to Toad Island Road and the Hockomock Swamp Wildlife
Management Area. These meadows are a great place to watch birds and
if you're lucky, deer. It's a short hike to the cache (about 1/2
mile each way) from the parking area but we think you'll find the
walk a pleasant one. The cache is a small ammo box with lots of
kids swag in it.
We adopted this cache on 6/7/08 from Downy288, who adopted it from
the original hiders, AT Section Hikers. It went missing/muggled
back in the winter. We believe it’s the first cache ever placed in
Taunton and thought that it should remain for historical reasons.
Kudos to the previous owners for keeping it alive. We live only
four miles away and think we can maintain it regularly and
properly. It's a nice area to head to if you want to see wildlife -
a mix of open fields, woods, streams and ponds with paths
throughout. Parking is not a problem so long as you get there
during daylight hours. The hike will take you through some nice
areas and lead you to a very small pond that abuts Snake River. If
you would like a water route, you can park at the river on Bay St.
where there is a put-in for a canoe or kayak. Distance from either
water or hiking parking is about a ½ mile. We moved the cache to
what we think is a more muggle-proof location. We had an accuracy
reading of ten feet, although there is heavy tree cover. The hint
should get you there. While you’re in this area we recommend also
doing the Turkey Tour multi, which starts close to this cache. It
has some imaginative stages and is well worth the time. NOTE: This
cache is located in the 4,903-acre Hockomock Swamp Wildlife
Management Area. We encourage you to explore other parts of this
great resource at any time of year. Please follow state rules for
WMA's, and note that this area is heavily hunted in season. We
would recommend against searching during deer-shotgun season in
early December. See this link

Remember to wear orange during hunting season to be safe!
