The Madness of King George Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Cuthberts: Having tried to get near the cache earlier today, we can see that a lot has changed on the South Easterly corner of the forest. Once, a space existed by the side of the road for three cars but now that is gone and the farmer has effectively cut off a good straight run to the monument with a gate, fencing (including some rather alarming barbed wire buried in long grass) and electrified cord fencing. From the forest side approaching the cache, the road is now clearly marked as 'Private'. We will revisit with a view to retrieving the cache on foot but, as it stands, we feel that the approaches to the cache are hazardous and do breach privacy - hence the archive.

I hope that all who visited it (including the Geocache UK coach party that inundated us with logs a few years' ago) enjoyed the location.

Geocache Description:

A beautiful forest and a testimonial to insanity !!

G:UK cache rating

In the North East edge of Salisbury plain lies the 2,500 acres that is Savernake Forest, the home of the magical 'Big Bellied Oak'. There is a main route through the forest called the 'Grand Avenue' which is around three miles long but there is so much to see that you probably would not realise it. 'Capability Brown' designed many of the main oak and beech avenues through this woodland but be warned that some of these are private to residents of the forest (human variety).

However, this cache page is concerned with a small corner, the South East corner of Savernake that contains the Thomas Bruce monument which was allegedly built to commemorate the return to sanity of King George III.

Try parking at N 51 22.667 W 01 39.431 and enjoying the walk along the 'green carpet' (seasons permitting). Watch out for Fallow and Roe Deer, especially on the outskirts of the main forest. Click here for an OS map to this parking space.

If you don't fancy the .75-mile walk, an alternative location to park would be N 51 22.924 W 40.339 but this has not been vetted for parking regulations.

The cache is hidden in an ammo box. Please say 'hi' to Bambi if he re-appears.
