This cache highlights one of the best preserved examples of 19th century penal architecture in North Carolina, the Old Wilkes Jail.
Built in 1859 at the brink of the Civil War, the jail housed such infamous characters as Tom Dula (better known as "Tom Dooley", who was convicted of murdering Laura Foster in 1866 and was immortalized in the popular Kingston Trio ballad "Tom Dooley") and Otto Wood, who became a well-known escape artist after escaping from 10 different jails and prisons. He didn't escape from the Wilkes Jail, however.
The jail contains a museum and many interesting artifacts of it's long 55 year history of housing both suspects and convicts. The hours of the museum vary, and I believe they are only open on weekends by appointment.
The question that must be answered to verify your visit is: There are two columns of names on the Sons of Confederate Veterans granite marker. What is the last name of the last person in the second column? Contact me and provide the last name, mentioned above. Don't put the name in your log entry!
