Whaleback Traditional Cache

This is a traditional cache that has a remarkable view nearby that you don't want to miss. This cache is located outside Shamokin, PA, in the anthracite coal region of Northeastern Pennsylvania. It is a wooded area with some rocky areas.
To get to the parking area for this cache, find the little town of Shamokin, PA. Find the intersection of RT. 61 and RT. 125 on your map. Take 125 south through the center of the town (mainly houses). You will be on RT. 125 south for about 2 miles and will come to a sharp bend to the left. DO NOT go around the bend!! Instead go straight (N 40º 46.628 W 76º 34.137). There will be a small “Shamokin Filler Co.” sign on your right. This means you are very close to the parking area. As you drive down the road, you will come to 2 signs that say “No winter maintenance beyond this point”. Continue driving past these signs. The pavement will end and the road will become very rocky. At this point you can park your car and walk to the cache (about .25 miles) unless you have a jeep or something that can drive on rocky terrain. If you decide to park at the bottom of the rocky road, make sure to leave room for jeeps and ATVs to get by. Continue up the rocky road and you will then pass a stone foundation on your left. Once the rocky road begins to level off, get your GPS ready!
To get to the Cache: Enter the trail at N 40º 45.954 W 76º 35.773. Follow trail to the cache. The coordinates for the cache is N 40º 45.915 W 76º 35.804.

After you have found the cache, continue along the trail for a short distance. You will notice the rather unfortunate site of garbage such as computers, refrigerators, beer cans, etc. that have been illegally dumped off in this area. We feel that this would be a great opportunity to cache in, trash out, but please be careful when doing so. The site you will come upon at the end of this short walk is the last thing you would expect to see here! Go to the coordinates N 40º 45.861 W 76º 35.788 .
