Please read description carefully, this cache is rated 3/3 for a reason! It is a beautiful and unique area, but is difficult terrain, and has some difficult obstacles! Proceed with caution!

Welcome to the Lawton Valley. If you dare to go here, be advised…if you are Closter phobic, forget it! If you don’t like getting your feet wet, forget it. The grade is steep at times and is not easy going! Oh yes, then there is the tunnel! Plenty of headroom, but “The River Runs Through It” not that it is deep, when I set it up, only about an inch deep, but this varies with the amount of rain. And where there is water, there is algae, and things that go bump in the night….and this tunnel that you must walk through, with the water, moss, algae, and the like is 200 feet long…YES I said 200 feet! You can see the light at the other end, but this is not for the soft hearted! Put your Fearless T shirt on, and give it a try, just don’t say you were not warned! This cache takes you DOWN into the Lawton Valley. This is a very unique area in Rhode Island. A DEEP gorge has been cut here, and there are sheer rock cliffs, and beautiful trees. A local tree expert claims that the stand of Sugar Maples here cannot be matched anywhere is southern New England, especially near the coast. This is a very special environment, and shouldn’t be missed. There are no actual trails perse, I found it best just to follow the streambed. There are remains of stonewalls, stone foundations, very old unmarked headstones, and overall, it is a very unique area. It could however use a bit of a cleanup, and it would be much appreciated if you attempt this cache, if you would bring a trash bag, and haul out a bit. If everyone does, in no time it will be cleaned up making it that much more special. Thanks in advance if you help! It is said that you can follow the valley all the way down to Narragansett Bay, but I haven’t been that far yet. Due to the nature of the beast here, a deep gorge with extensive tree coverage, GPS seems to be a bit jumpy. The hint will be a big help!*** Parking is on a side road parallel to Rt. 114, kinda across the street from Raytheon. You will see a sign here from Newport Water Dept. ie no fishing, swimming, dumping refuse, and stuff like that. This really pertains to the reservoir up behind you opposite of the direction of the cache. I have spoken with them, and they said no problem for people to go in the woods here, just mind your manners, their main concern is discarding of refuse. Most of the land is state owned, and some owned by the towns, a local town tree expert is working on making this a public park! From parking, walk slightly up the hill to where you will enter the woods. This is in the direction of the “Lawton Brook” sign. On the opposite side of the road from the sign, You are in the right place if you see the remains of a stone foundation on your left as you enter. You may then notice a cement marker at ground level with the top painted blue. Continue straight into the woods, and you will see the old headstones. Continue in and slightly to your right and you will soon come to the tunnel entrance. Good luck, and give me your feedback if you dare to enter the Valley. The tunnel takes you under Rt. 114! Cache at time of placement, contains an assortment of wild animals, a wheres george dollar, a Travel Bug, and a log book.
