Geocache Description:

This multicache consists of four parts that will take you through a little known area rich with natural beauty. During your cache hunt, you’ll enjoy one of the last remaining tracts of old growth cottonwood forest along the Missouri River.

You will need to find several virtual caches and a mini cache to obtain the clues for the coordinates of the final cache. This cache was created in cooperation with the North Dakota Game & Fish Department.

Location 1: This is a virtual cache located at the coordinates above. To find Location 2, answer this question:

How many letters of text are on the sign? ______

Hint: The & sign counts as a letter, punctuation marks do not.

From the total number of letters of text, subtract the number of letter of text in line four. _____ - _____ = _____. Subtract this number from the decimal fraction of minutes of latitude. This is the latitude for Location 2. _____ - _____ = _____

Multiply the total number of letters of text by three _____ * 3 = _____ and add to this number the total number of letters in line two and line five _____ + _____ + _____ = _____. Subtract this number from the decimal fraction of minutes of longitude. __________ - _____ = __________ This is the longitude for Location 2.

Location 2: This also is a virtual cache and it tells the story about something that has been here for a long, long time. To find Location 3, answer these questions:

How many feet in diameter was the old tree? _____
What was the age of the old tree? _____
What was the height of the old tree? _____

Multiply the diameter by 5 _____ * 5 = _____ and add that number to the decimal fraction of minutes of latitude for Location 2. _____ + _____ = _____ This is the latitude for Location 3.

From the age, subtract the height _____ - _____= _____ From this number subtract 42 _____ - 42 = _____ Add this number to the decimal fraction of minutes of longitude for Location 2. _____ + _____ = _____ This is the longitude for Location 3.

Location 3: This is a mini cache containing a copy of the Journals of Lewis and Clark. To find Location 4, you will need to read Journal entries made in 1804 and 1805. Make note of the following: 1) On Oct 17, 1804, what was the minutes of latitude when Lewis took the altitude of the sun? _____ 2) On Oct 30, 1804, how many men did Clark take with him up the river? _____ 3) On Nov 12, 1804, how many pounds of meat did the chief bring? _____ 4) On Feb 11, 1805, at what time did Sacagawea deliver a baby boy? _____ and 5) On Dec 10, 1804, how many buffalo were killed?_____ Total these numbers_____ + _____ + _____ + _____ +_____ = _____ Add this number to the decimal fraction of minutes of latitude for Location 3. _____ + _____ = _____This is the latitude for Location 4.

Once again, how many buffalo were killed on Dec 10, 1804? _____ Subtract this number from the decimal fraction of minutes of longitude for Location 3. _____ - _____= _____ This is the longitude for Location 4.
