The cache is located at the southern tip of Parris Island near the site of the Spanish fort, San Marcos and the French Huguenot fort, Charlesfort. Parking is at N32° 18.386 W80° 40.553. The cache location is on the nature trail.
This is one of the few areas in the US where the same terrain has been under the military jurisdiction of so many different countries. It marks the northernmost reach of the Spanish Empire on the east coast of North America.
From this area you have views of Hilton Head and St. Helena (or as the Spanish named it, Isla Santa Elena) islands as well as archeological exhibits and an interpretive nature trail.
For a detailed history lesson in a very small area, the Jean Ribaut Monument and the nearby nature trail are well worth the visit. Tell the guards at the main gate that you’re going to visit the Ribaut Monument and they’ll tell you how to get there. (It’s near the golf course clubhouse.) The area is accessible by automobile or bicycle from the Beaufort area. Bicyclists must wear safety vests and helmets.
Because this is a military base, you should have a picture ID, drivers license and proof of insurance with you when you enter the base. You should attempt this cache during daylight hours only. Please use common sense and don’t carry any weapons or forbidden substances. By entering the base, you and your vehicle are subject to search. (Note: This cache may be unavailable during terrorist alerts, however Parris Island is generally open to the public.)
NOTE: TELL THE GUARDS YOU WANT TO VISIT THE JEAN RIBAUT HISTORICAL SITE NEAR THE GOLF COURSE. TELL THEM YOU'RE INTERESTED IN US HISTORY AND THAT THE SITE WAS RECOMMENDED BY A FRIEND.
DON'T MENTION GEOCACHING AS IT WILL ONLY CONFUSE THEM AND MAY PREVENT YOUR ENTRY.
