Geocache Description:

Near the (only) fork in the (only) road between Chicken and Eagle Alaska. But you will need a GPS to find the right location

It has been said that a photograph is worth 1000 words, so I will attach a few (non-spoiler) photos to this cache description and keep this rather short. The cache is a 3 inch diameter black ABS tube about 2 feet long with a removable cap on one end. This container is strapped to a tree (making it accessible in all seasons for those passing through on a snowmachine in the winter). There is plenty of space between the black spruce trees here so the GPS reception is very good. Let your GPS point you to the tree and you will find this cache with a minimal amount of searching. There is a thermometer in the cache. Please record the temperature during your visit. It was 54 and raining when the cache was established. Please leave the cache with the removable cap facing DOWN. This will ensure that no water gets into the cache. Additional travel infromation for this area can be found at this site: http://www.bellsalaska.com/myalaska/akhwypg6.html which gives distances and locations for stops and services along the way. ATTENTION: During the end of August and the month of September this area is heavily hunted. The remains of harvested animals WILL ATTRACT BEARS. Be alert to your surroundings when approaching this cache or anywhere along the highway in this area of the world. Make lots of noise traveling through brush and forest cover as a startled bear is quite unpredictable. Other that that, Have a Great Hike! June 2017 Update - A recent log indicates this cache may be in trouble. After 14 years in the wild and over 230 visits, the cache may have drawn the interest of "larger wildlife". The latest log by Atomiksky (6/14/17) shows a bungee cord used to attach the cache to a tree has been ... ravaged (I assume by a bear and not a cacher!:-)) If subsequent geocachers are also unable to find the cache, I will disable this cache that has endured almost as many interior Alaska winters as I have! LOL !
