A short(ish) walk along a Northamptonshire linear park, past the Northampton & Lamport Steam Railway. Being reclaimed railway land, it's very flat and thus a fairly easy walk!
This cache is a short distance along the Brampton Way linear park, which is sited on the reclaimed land formerly used by the Northampton to Market Harborough railway branch line. After the line was closed in 1981, Northamptonshire and Leicestershire County Councils purchased the land and developed it into a 14 mile long country park. There is plenty of wildlife around, Rabbits and field mice seem to be around every corner... At the time of the lines closure, a group was formed with the intention of reopening the branch line, and by 1995 had a station, 2 signal boxes and 3/4 mile of line running. On most Sundays and Bank Holidays, the group operate pleasure rides on the steam trains, for more information on the groups efforts and their timetable, see their website http://www.nlr.org.uk The track only runs for a very small length of the park and is seperated from the footpath by a safety fence. There is free car parking at N52 16.823 W000 55.202, if you park here and follow the park footpath, the walk is approx 1.7 miles. For those who would prefer a shorter walk, there is also parking at N52 17.565 W000 55.426, the walk from here is approx 0.8 miles. Both car parks are in very close proximity to pubs, so "lubrication" should not be a problem! The cache itself is just off the footpath, you don't need to cross any fences to get at it. Due to its proximity to the footpath, take care when finding/rehiding it as in the summer the area can be busy.
