Road may be a real problem after rain.
I found this one by accident years ago. I always liked the location, it was pretty and the airplanes on the bomb range making strafing runs were awesome. From Salina you could hear the roar of the jets as they powered out of the strafing dives. They would disappear behind the hill to the west of here and then magically blast out. Sometimes they would break the sound barrier and make the hair stand up on the back of your neck.
North of here are the communities of Brookville and Bavaria. Sonic booms there in the sixties and early seventies were common, sometimes strong enough to shatter windows in houses and businesses.
Just south of here was as close as I could get without getting on the range. See if you notice where the name of the cache came from.
If you go south and then west on the perimeter road, at the crest of one of the hills is a set of pens. There used to be a target sign there. It was always kind of eerie to know the jets were lining up from the south on that sign next to the road.
If you continue west and then turn north, watch closely back to the east and you will be able to see what looks like a train in the canyon. It is actually a row of buses parked nose to tail to look like a train from above. A friend got clearance to fly over once and it really does look like a train. I did not realize then that it was visible from the west side.
This is just another opportunity to get out to the pastures in the Smoky Hill area. It is really pretty country, full of wildlife, in spite of the barren look.
You are looking for a pickle jar, the original contents included a pen, pencil, notebook, travel bug, German medals, German brass, a frisbie and who knows what other treasures were dropped in. It was pretty well stuffed. Have fun! We hope you see some military aircraft circling nearby!
