Geocache Description:

If you are looking for a northern Minnesota adventure with a little bit of everything, this one is for you! The cache is located on beautiful Star Island, the largest of 4 islands on Cass Lake. The island is accessible only by boat or canoe, but well worth the visit. The island has its own 200-acre lake, Lake Windigo, which is plentiful with varieties of sunfish and bass. For your enjoyment, bring along a fishing pole to catch some sunnies, take a swim in the clear waters of Windigo, or just relax with a picnic on the sandy shores of the island. Star Island also has six miles of hiking trails which boast beautiful views of the lake and surrounding forest land. The island has been protected from timber cutting since 1902, and its old-growth pine trees make it a favorite with bald eagles which you may likely see on your visit here. There are some homes on Star Island under a lease arrangement with the federal government, but the U.S. Forest Service also manages the island for both scenic and recreation use. There is a small campground located on the island's southwest shore with three tent sites for no fee if you wish to extend your visit.

To begin your journey to the island, you can enter Cass Lake via one of its three public access sites (visit the Minnesota DNR website for these public access locations). You should then proceed towards Star Island to these coordinates: N 47 25.362 W 094 34.047

From this spot, you can easily access the island's trail system that will lead you to the cache. The cache is an ammo box and includes a log book and pencil for you to log your visit. We hope you enjoy your trip to Star Island and its many natural wonders as much as we have over the years. Good luck and enjoy!
