Geocache Description:

This relic, buried deep in the sand, is what remains of a former sea scalloper, the Sea King. The mast marks the grave of this ship, beached in Feburary 1963 at Barnegat Light, Long Beach Island, NJ. The Sea King was towing another boat when it got its rope caught in a propeller and drifted onto the beach. A number of years ago the Sea King's mast was over 1000 feet from the shoreline.

Following the completion of the south jetty to Barnegat Inlet millions of cubic yards of sand has accumulated. At one time the beach was even with the outermost end of the south jetty. The wind has generated vast dune fields and vegetation is altering the landscape moving toward a maritime forest. While there is some local human dissatisfaction with the immense beach now fronting their homes, the wildlife have a major new habitat along the New Jersey shoreline.

Most of your walk to the cache will be on land that didn't exist a number of years ago (thats the main point of this virtual). As you could imagine the 'beach front' residents are a little annoyed; their walk to the ocean was once measured in feet, now it can be measured fractions of a mile. Although I can tell you if you are looking for a less crowded beach in the summer go around here because most people don't want to lug themselves (and kids, food, beach gear, etc.) over the massive sand dunes.

To verify your find, please post a photo of yourself and GPSr standing next to the mast where it protrudes from the sand or email me the name that is on the gold plate attached to the mast. Please do not post the name on the gold plate in your log entry even if encrypted.

At times it might be a little tough getting out to the actual cache sight (some flooding may occur between dunes). If you are going to do a picture verification please note you MUST BE standing next to the mast or it IS NOT a find.

NOTE: The information about the ship was found on the web and from local residents of Barnegat Light. I will try to do more research on this ship. If anyone had more accurate or additional information please feel free to email me. Thanks!
