First Bookmobile in Indiana

The first stage of this cache is near the historical Carnegie library building (located at 120 S. Center St.) opened in Jan., 1913, in Plainfield, In. The second stage is near the present library in Plainfield. The third stage (really just an offset of the second) is located inside the library building about 100 feet away. The library hours are:

Monday - Thursday 9:00 am to 8:00 pm
Friday & Saturday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
Sunday ** 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm
(**The library is open on Sundays starting the Sunday after Labor Day until the Sunday before Memorial Day weekend.)

You do not need a library card. The final cache is in an unusual container in a child-friendly place with free, internet-connected computors available to the public. You will not be able to access the final cache without visiting stage two

.

The original Carnegie building is now a private residence. The first cache is not located on the private property. Be sure to check out some of the historic buildings in old downtown Plainfield while your here. An even earlier library building (1905) can be viewed at 130 N. Vine street (just two blocks E.). This is also a private residence.

The new Plainfield library

The state’s fist bookmobile was spawned from the Carnegie library. A 1916 converted Ford, the library’s “auto-bookwagon,” moved books into the county’s rural areas. It may be the first bookmobile in the country.

Andrew Carnegie was perhaps the first wealthy person to state publicly that the rich have a moral obligation to give away their fortunes.

As a philanthropist, one of Carnegie's lifelong interests was the establishment of free public libraries to make available to everyone a means of self-education. There were only a few public libraries in the world when, in 1881, Carnegie began to promote his idea. He subsequently spent over $56 million to build 2,509 libraries throughout the English-speaking world.

During his lifetime, Carnegie gave away over $350 million. He died August 11, 1919.
