El municipi de Balsareny està situat a la vall del Llobregat, al nord de la comarca de Bages, en un terreny ondulat on predominen els boscos de pi blanc. El terme és travessat per l'Eix del Llobregat i també per la carretera BP-4313, que enllaça Balsareny amb Súria i Avinyó. L'agricultura és poc rellevant i en la ramaderia destaca especialment el sector porcí. Activitat econòmica important és l'explotació de sals potàssiques, que va començar el 1945.
Prop de la població destaca el Castell.
És una construcció força ben conservada de segle XIV, bon exemple de fortalesa gòtica. Enfilat en un turó sobre el riu, avui és ben visible des de l'Eix del Llobregat, des d'on el castell de Balsareny destaca amb els seus merlets airosos. Magnífica vista sobre l'entorn, especialment cap al nord de la comarca i fins al Pirineu.
