How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

The cache is now a round click lid type plastic container attached to its surroundings with velcro, so please take care when retrieving it not to pull too hard so that it pulls the velcro off.

This is Part 1 of a 4 part cache series. In order to complete Part 4 – “The Final Raid” you must also complete, "High Spirits" and Guys Gaff". These can be done in any order and can be logged as individual finds.

The co-ordinates are NOT that of the cache, but of where you will find the answer to the following question. For the aircraft enthusiasts, from this location you may be able to see not only the classic aircraft of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, but also the most up to date aircraft in the Royal Air Force, the Eurofighter Typhoon which are both based at RAF Coningsby:

Look at the sign attached to the fence.

In order to locate the Cache, use the 6th word, 3rd letter; 2nd word, 2nd letter; last word, 3rd letter; 7th word, 1st letter; in turn and the code below to replace the X’s in the Northing co-ordinate.

A B C D E F G
0 1 2 3 4 5 6

H I J K L M N
7 8 9 0 1 2 3

O P Q R S T U
4 5 6 7 8 9 0

V W X Y Z
1 2 3 4 5

N 5X, 0X.X6X

Repeat the above using the 3rd word, 4th letter; 11th word, 1st letter; 5th word, 5th letter; 1st word, 4th letter using the same code to replace the X’s in the Westing co-ordinate.

W 00X, X1.6XX

When you have found this cache, on the log sheet there is a single word clue. Make a note of this as you will need it to get to "The Final Raid"

There is a choice of length of walks to the cache site depending upon ability. If you would like a longer walk, approx 2.2m there and back, then park for free at Tattershall Castle (National Trust). N 53, 06.147 W 000, 11.416 and perhaps take the opportunity to pay a visit to the castle. The castle built in 1433, has stunning views on clear days across Lincolnshire. It also takes you near flooded gravel pits, which are a haven for a variety of wildfowl and along the River Bain. Archaeological finds in this area, include Mammoth remains.

For the less energetic or if you do not have enough time, a shorter riverside walk of approx 0.7m there and back is now possible. We suggest parking near the Packet Inn at N53, 04.962, W000, 11.709. The pub serves some excellent food and drink, which could be well worth a visit on your return from the cache trip.

Although not marked on O/S maps there is a new bridge and path linking Tattershall with Dogdyke restoring a long-standing missing link in the Rights of Way network. It is thought that the original bridge was removed shortly after the 2nd World War. As this path is newly restored and has not been used much yet, it is clear to walk along, however the wearing of shorts is not advised at present! There may be horses in the field the footpath edges.

The cache is sited on a fairly quiet stretch of the river, but please be aware of golfers that maybe nearby that may see you when accessing the cache.
