This cache is a small 1ltr clear plastic locking lid type box.
This is the final part of a four part cache series. In order to locate this cache you must have been to the previous three caches; Timothy Potter, High Spirits and Guys Gaff.
The cache has had a total revamp and moved to a new area well away from the old location. Please ensure that the cache is rehidden well after logging your find.
The area in which the cache is hidden is owned by Forest Enterprises and worked on behalf of the Forestry Commission. Please be aware that there may be the occasions when access to the cache area may be restricted due to special events taking place. If so there will be signs up in the car park.
Also, please be aware that Ostlers Plantation is a haven for the UKs only poisonous snake, namely the 'Adder'. Keep an eye on young cachers and be careful when putting hands in holes. They are more scared of you and will hear you coming, so you are unlikely to see one.
The co-ordinates are NOT that of the cache, but of where you will find ample free parking.
Due to pesky muggles Timothy Potter is missing so it’s been disabled, the word needed to collect was Hampden.
Write down each word gained from the previous micro caches in order i.e. the word gained from Timothy Potter, (Hampden) then the word from High Spirits and finally Guy’s Gaff to form one long string of letters. (24 letters in total)
Using the 7th, 10th, 13th and 21st letter of the string and the code below replace the X’s in the Northing co-ordinate.
A B C D E F G
0 1 2 3 4 5 6
H I J K L M N
7 8 9 0 1 2 3
O P Q R S T U
4 5 6 7 8 9 0
V W X Y Z
1 2 3 4 5
N 5X, 0X.X2X
Repeat the above using the 16th, 11th and 2nd letter from the string and the same code to replace the X’s in the Westing co-ordinate.
W 000, X0.X8X
Now its off to find the cache! Once found, continue down the path to explore the plantation.
During World War 2, the area was used as part of RAF Woodhall Spa. Construction started in 1941 and when designing the airfield, they made use of the heavily wooded area as natural cover. The area where the cache is hidden was part of the Northern perimeter and you can still see the remains of runways and buildings. RAF Woodhall Spa opened in 1942 and was home to many Squadrons, including 97, 619, 617 and 627; the most famous being 617 “The Dambusters”. The last operation flown by 617 was on 25th April 1945 and the site was closed for flying in October 1945. Part of the airfield was retained and used for Bloodhound missiles until 1965. Only a small area of RAF Woodhall Spa is maintained by the MOD at present.
