Keiki Cache #3 - Kaupe Traditional Cache

Site Description: Dis short trail continues 2 da north an den ends at Kapena Falls. Walking 'bout 60 feet NORTH of da trailhead (N: 21° 19.448 W: 157° 50.813) going quickly lead U 2 what McAllister calls Site 69 in McAllister's Archaeology of Oahu, Bulletin 104. Bishop Museum, 1933 pages 83-84. Dis iz da "man & dog" petroglyphs dat tourists are shown. Da petroglyphs are of humans and animals. In one interpretation, da dog images represent a cannibal dog-mannamed Kaupe. According 2 Martha Beckwith's book Hawaiian Mythology,Kaupe "overthrew the government of Ka-hanai-a-Ke-akua (Reared by gods) and ruled the land from Nuuanu to the sea." Terrain Description: Foa moa descriptions of da petroglyphs check da link to pages 83-84 in da Site Description. Site #67 which is also the cache location get one plaque. Getting to Site #67 requires you to walk a 20 ft area that is steep with loose dirt & jus' a few bushes to whack. Da area around da petroglyphs have steep drop-offs. So, be careful. Site #68 is located in a cave like shelter (a flashlight is necessary to see all of da petroglyphs) finding this group of petroglyphs requires about 15 ft of rock scampering. Site #69 is da safest location to view petroglyphs; this group is just off da main trail to Kapena falls.
