Geocache Description:

The cache is a large ammo box located in an undeveloped part of McClung Park right in the middle of Jefferson City, about one tenth of a mile from the parking lot.

Three Bucks Cache derived its name from the three large buck deer that I saw when I was looking for a place for this cache. One of the bucks was a trophy ten-pointer and the other two were large eight pointers. One of the nice things about Jefferson City are the undeveloped green-areas that wind their way throughout town. Almost every neighborhood has woods nearby and kids have nice places to play in their back yards (not to mention the wildlife).

You will enter McClung Park off of Chestnut Street, right across the street from the Dwight T Reid Football Stadium at Lincoln University. Neither MapQuest or TopoZone show the new entrance to the park. It's only been there for 14 years, they probably haven't had time yet.

McClung Park has an interesting history. Prison Warden McClung had his prisoners build the dance hall and picnic pavilions in the 1910’s when it belonged to the Missouri State Park System. The City acquired the land by trading some property near the Prison for the park. For a while, it was the home of County Fairgrounds. The park was even a site for a Civil War Battle and there are still remnants of the trenches that were dug for the fight.

The cache is located near a large piece of cement. From the parking lot, it is an easy one-tenth mile walk that doesn’t go up or down hill much, which is unusual for Jefferson City. Please be discreet when you start your search, the park sees a lot of usage. I suggest you start your search at N38.33.486 x W92.10.331. There you will find a helper that will lead you through the woods to the cache location. The helper is a fence and all you need do is follow along-side it. You do NOT need to cross the fence. If it is tick season, I strongly suggest spraying your legs before you start. My kids helped me stuff the cache so there is a lot of kid's stuff in it! The cache is in a large ammo box and contains a Teachers Pet Apple, a Back Street Boys book, a star eraser, glow-in-the-dark chalk, Junior Slinky, Strawberry Daydream Journal Set, glow-in-the-dark skate scooter, a tee-shirt, a bracelet, a coloring book and a Lazylightning GeoToken souvenir.

Be sure to cover the cache box thoroughly when you are done. I’m not sure that the area receives much traffic, but it could be a neighborhood place to hang out (I would have used it when I was a kid).

Jeff City Parks and Recreation has a friendly Geocaching policy that can be accessed by going to www.jeffcitymo.org/parks. If you visit please let them know where you are from in your log.
