Geocache Description:

Gunnison Lake, known locally as the Goshen Ocean, is a flood control project in the Sugar River Watershed built in 1983. It encompasses 96 acres with a recreational storage of 1800 acre-feet and flood storage of 1065 acre-feet, impounded by a 65-foot earthen dam. The Sullivan County Conservation District and the NH Water Resources Board assisted by the Soil Conservation Service built it under the watershed protection and flood prevention act.

Gunnison Lake is named after Captain John W. Gunnison. Born November 11, 1812, in Old Center Goshen, this rugged individualist taught school in a nearby log cabin before graduating from West Point in 1837. His talents as a surveyor and map maker took him to the Midwest to explore the Great Lakes; thence on an expedition to the Mormon settlement in Utah where he explored the Salt Lake, studied the Mormon faith, and published a “History of the Mormons”. In 1853 he was chosen to command an expedition from St. Louis through Colorado and Utah to survey and map land for the Pacific Railroad which would connect the east with the west; his tragic death by bow and arrow occurred in October of that year.

The Williamson Memorial Park on Gunnison Lake features picnic tables, canoe and kayak access, and a walking trail. The Ruth LeClair (a Conservation Commission Member) Memorial Trail is a well-maintained three-mile trail around the lake passing through woods, fields, private lawns, and across the dam with views of the lake and nearby hills including Mount Sunapee.

The park can be accessed off of NH Route 31 in Goshen, NH, by either of two short dirt roads, Gunnison Lake Road or Four Corners Road, that lead to opposite ends of the dam. Small parking lots are available at the end of both roads. There is no fee. The trail passes through both areas on its loop around the lake. The cache is located approximately 0.5 miles from one end of the dam; a brisk 10 minute hike.

The cache is a black ammo box and is spiked with an assortment of goodies, including a nail puzzle, two koalas, wooden apple, Bermuda dollar, Christmas stocking sew on patch, clips, LSB key chain, East Caribbean dollar, 40 confetti, parachute buckle, a Loonie, Mt. Sunapee patch, and a Kangaroo-in-a-can.

Coordinates are by Garmin GPS III+ averaging, no WAAS.

Bring a lunch and take the time to walk and enjoy the 3 mile trail.
