Geocache Description:

This remote cache overlooks Black Rock Creek and the nearly-lost-to-history Centennial Road. Some local history then is in order. In her book '

The Blue Hills of Maryland', Paula M. Strain speaks of a footpath from Bagtown (still on good maps) on the west to Wolfsville on the east side of South Mountain that was built in the early 1800’s for Independence Day celebrants to reach Black Rock. The path was later improved for wagon use and completed in time for the centennial of 1876, hence the name Centennial Road. It appears these celebrations actually took place near the two large springs which feed Black Rock Creek, and the place we know today on the Appalachian Trail as Pogo Campground. According to Strain, a man named Williams, who was present for one of the early 1800’s celebrations, wrote: “The most popular and beautiful resort in the county, although very inaccessible, was the Black Rock. Here, every Independence Day, parties would gather and spread sumptuous repasts on the green sward which surrounded the springs. The Declaration of Independence was regularly read and an oration was delivered, which was sure to be met with a hearty reception and vociferous applause for patriotism was stimulated by an abundant supply of the pure liquor distilled from Washington county rye. At these…gathering(s), there had to be thirteen regular toasts to correspond with the thirteen original States…” You get the idea. Heh heh.

The best approach is from the trailhead on White Oak Road (0.39 mi)., via the Thurston-Griggs (blue) trail. Park at the end of White Oak. The frontal assault is the toughest. You can go further up the trail and employ the switch-back approach. Elevation rise from White Oak to the Overlook is around 300’. The container is a sealed metal box painted to fit its environment.
