Geocache Description:

In English: Tor's Yard. The area is an old section of Oslo, close to Akerselven.

Torshov by night .

Torshov was a holy place in old Norse (Nørrøn) times, east of Frysja, to worship the god Tor with the hammer (Torshaug). The other holy place, Hov in Aker, was west of Hovselva (close to PPJ#19?).

In middle ages Torshov partly belonged to the church, but in 1681 the entire farm got the same ownership. In 1845 the farm was again divided in two; upper and lower. Until 1859 the whole district was outside the city boarders, in Aker. When Oslo enlarged in 1859 the western part of the farm Torshov came inside, and by the next enlargement, in 1878, most of the area was included. When Oslo and Aker merged in 1948, the final and northern part was also included. The public development of the neighbourhood happened around 1920.

Traditionally this has been a working class area, where many worked in industries along Akerselven and centrally in Oslo. The buildings are therefore relativly new, but most of them consist of rather small apartments, many have only 1-2 rooms. The square for the starting point was a popular centre, with larger apartments, some used for embassies . Today we find lots of new building projects in the area, especially close to the river. Torshov has lately been more popular among todays urban people.
