This black ammo box should be an easy find, I get great GPS signals up here. You can expect a mild climb, which is most strenuous if you start from the Haight Street side. Please use appropriate stealth, as the area is busy with dog walkers all day. There are great peek-a-boo views of the city through the tree cover.
Welcome to the oldest park in San Francisco. The city created its first park in 1867 by paying squatters over $88,000 to move off the 36-acre barren hilltop, which was then christened 'Hill Park'. The name was changed in 1894 to 'Buena Vista Park' by Mayor Adolph Sutro and park superintendent John McLaren, who also encouraged San Francisco schoolchildren to plant trees on it's slopes every Arbor day. During the Great Fire of 1906, local residents gathered on the summit to watch their downtown burn. 1926 brought the Sunset Muni tunnel which was bored directly beneath the park, and in the 1930's, a series of public works programs introduced many improvements to the park, including new roads, retaining walls and gutters. Many of the stones used for these improvements were actually broken up marble headstones from the recently exhumed Lone Mountain Cemetery, and some headstone inscriptions can still be spotted today by the careful observer. More improvements came in the 1980's when the road and parking lot at the summit were transformed into walking paths and grassy areas. This is a proper urban park -- not a 'botanical garden' or a 'habitat restoration' type of place; you can pretty much tromp wherever you like without worrying about harming 'native grasses,' but do be mindful of the erosion control areas.
The park has excellent access, you will find paths, roads and staircases leading in from every direction. Steep climbs are inevitable, as this cache is near the summit. The climb from Haight Street is the longest and steepest, so for an easier walk, park on the south side near Buena Vista West @ Upper Terrace Drive and take the road or one of the staircases directly to the top.
ENJOY!
