Celestial Navigation Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

TAT: I hate to see this go, it's been a lot of fun. But, the hiding place is in no shape for a simple replacement and I've moved quite a long way away.

Look for a new and improved version somewhere under the stars!

Geocache Description:

Avast ye land lubbers, if it’s treasure ye seek, ye shall look to the heavens. This cache will give you a chance to use your celestial navigation skills. If you want to have your coordinates verified, please send me an email. If all this math and thinking gives you a headache, forget the cache; just drive to the coordinates and enjoy a little escape from shopping!

Once upon a time, a pirate, Captain Lowther, hid his treasure not far from here. Afraid that his treasure would be found, he devised a way hide the treasure while leaving the map in plain sight! It seems that on his first voyage as a pirate, the crew had decided to go to Elizabeth City in what is now North Carolina, from the Gambian Castle on the coast of Africa. Just before getting to what is now called Bermuda, the ship encountered a fierce hurricane that blew them almost 1500 miles off course. Eager to get ashore, they landed here, in Kittery, and hid the treasure. Rather than make a map, Captain Lowther used his ship’s log as a map; hiding the treasure to match the log! He chose the day before the hurricane to represent the starting point. That starting point is now a parking lot (at the coordinates above). Then, he hid the treasure using the scale of 1 mile on land = 3000 nautical miles. Here is a copy of the Ship’s Log, showing the actual sextant readings he made: The ship’s clock was set in Greenwich, England and was surprisingly accurate.
