Updated 10/14/08. The Cache has been replaced with same coordinates. We wanted to adopt this cache after our first visit and find here. We knew it was special. There is an erie yet facinating feel to the area. Less than a mile from the frenzy of I -35, we read the historical mark on site & felt like we were thrown back in time to the era depicted. We chose to keep the original Cache page to retain the original flavor that Hiemdahl created. Enjoy:
During WW I there were three flying fields around Fort Worth, Hicks in the north, Carruthers in the west and Barron in the south. Sadly, over 100 men were killed training at these fields.
Hiemdahl became interested in the WW I training fields after doing "Jenny and the Dancer" (visit link)
Quite by coincidence he met Bill Leary who has written a book about this part Fort Worth's aviation history. In the book "Flyers of Barron Field" (now only available on CD-ROM) the author details his mother's first person experiences as a nurse stationed at Barron Field during WW I. Quite apart from some of the characters who went on to become famous both locally and nationally, I was fascinated to find out that one of the buildings from the airfield not only still stood, but was a landmark in its own right. (Be aware that the cache is NOT inside the building.)
The building now belongs to the Everman ISD, which is a hint to its subsequent history. Thanks to the Everman ISD for their permission to place a cache near this historic building.
While the structure itself was a ammunition storage building for the airfield, bonus points if you can discover what the historical significance of the building was after the war. NOTE: you will not find the information at the site. This will require some digging in the library.
Happy caching,
Hiemdahl
