Oregon Trail and Kelton Road

From this cache site you can see the approach to where a bridge was constructed across the Malad Gorge. The bridge once carried wagons traveling the Oregon Trail. From about 1864 to 1883 this was on the regular route that carried both freight and passengers between Boise and the railhead at Kelton Utah. This trail had so much traffic that you can still see the grooves cut into the rocks as you walk along the trail from the parking lot to the cache site. When the Oregon Short line Railroad was constructed in 1883 the Kelton Road was of no further use.

This is not a good place to let small children run wild until you see what is there. It is not a dangerous place, but be careful and don’t take chances.

Direction to the cache – from I-84 take exit 147, go East on mile road 2350 to OLD MALAD RIVER HWY, at the scales, turn North for approximately a half mile. Look for a road that takes you to a small parking lot on the East side with a signboard shaped like a birdhouse. From the parking lot there is a well worn trail that takes you to the cache site. let your GPS show you the way. Hope you enjoy this cache.
