Bald Knob is the feature that makes Rocky Mount Rocky Mount! At
1413 feet elevation it isn't by any means the highest hill around
but it does rise prominently directly behind Franklin County High
School. From below it doesn't seem all that bald but when you're
standing on top, you get a great view, to the north and west the
town of Rocky Mount, to the south and east, farm land. In every
direction in the distance you see mountains.
There are a couple of ways to get to Bald Knob. First, the
short, easy way. During non-school hours you can park at the school
track parking lot and walk to the back of the track. There is a
gate to a trail leading uphill to a large water tank and a little
farther to Bald Knob. During school hours you may have to approach
from the back side, a good little hike. From Main Street turn at
the court house on to East Court Street and go about 1 mile. The
road is winding and narrow but you can find a turn around and park
on the side of the road. From there follow your GPSr uphill. Wear
sturdy shoes and be careful when you are on top; there are cliffs
and, believe it or not, cacti!
