Son of V-Max Placed in memory of V-Max (senior) who was plundered - TWICE
There are several ways to attack this cache. The easiest, and quickest, is to park at N21° 21.847' W157° 46.804' and take the trail you will find at the uphill end of the parking lot. In the area of the cache, the GPS coverage is a little spotty, so if you can't locate it using the coordinates, then go to N21º 21.781 W157º 46.768 and savor the view. Then turn 180 degrees and walk straight ahead for about 120 feet. That's where you'll find the cache.
When you step off the trail, walk very gently so you do not blaze a trail to the cache. When you replace the cache, be sure to place it carefully so it can't be seen from the trail or from where you stand to retrieve it. You'll know what I mean after you find it.
While you're in the area, go find Tree-Max - it's only a few minutes off-course.
Now, if you want to turn this into a day of hiking and geocaching, here's what I would suggest:
---> Use two cars. Leave one in the neighborhood around N21° 21.526' W157° 45.842' (be thoughtful of the neighbors and park in an out-of-the way spot).
---> Now pile everyone into the second car and drive to the parking lot at N21° 21.847' W157° 46.804' and begin your adventure.
---> First go find Tree-Max (GCD2C2)
---> Now backtrack a bit and go find Son of V-Max
---> When done, continue down the main trail about a mile until you see a secondary trail turn off to the left. It will be on a spot that is out in the open and should be clearly marked with a small sign.
---> Take this trail down to Wake Up And Smell The Coffee (GC319F)
---> Continue down the trail to a bench on your left and a secondary trail to the right. Take the secondary trail down the hill and follow the stream bed straight ahead to the falls. You will probably see several folks along this route.
---> When you're done at the falls (be sure to read the signs about Leptospirosis if you swim in the water), head back up the hill to rejoin the main trail near the bench.
---> Continue down the trail and you will eventually come out in the neighborhood where your other car is parked. Now drive back and fetch your other car from the parking lot.
Depending on your hiking speed, and how long you linger at the caches and the falls, this will all take anywhere from around 2.5 to 4.5 hours, but the views are great, the trails fairly easy, and it's mostly downhill. I would guess the overall distance to be 4.5 to 5 miles.
Finally, a few small reminders which would apply to ANY hike in Hawaii -
- Be considerate of residents when parking in a residential neighborhood (no trash, don't trample the lawn, go into the street to apply bug spray, etc.)
- Don't leave anything of value in your car. Unfortunately, this must be the car break-in capital of the free world. Some people I know go so far as to leave the windows down and the glove-box open to show thieves that there is nothing there.
- Carry adequate water and bring sunscreen. Don't drink any stream water.
- Have a GREAT TIME!!
