This cache is part of a year-long class project by Mike Seavert's 6th grade students at Whitnall Middle School in Greenfield, Wisconsin, just a few blocks south of where the cache is hidden. The students are learning how to use a GPS system and what geocaching is all about in their social studies class. The cache contains a Flat Stanley with a travel bug and passport book attached to him. If you are the lucky one to stumble upon it first and would like to help participate in our project, please read the first three pages of his passport. Our class is trying to get Stanley to travel from cache to cache through all 50 states by June 1, 2004. We are also collecting small objects that represent each of the 50 states, so bring something with you that you can fit in one of our envelopes (represents a state symbol, sports team, small souvenir from a famous place, postcard, etc.). If you don't find Stanley in the cache, chances are fellow geocachers are helping him on his way in his amazing race across the country. At least you can leave something behind for us and sign our log book.
The cache will be checked weekly for items. To date, we found the following items:
California - Pebble Beach golf ball
Colorado - souvenir bell & Pike's Peak patch
Florida - key chain and sewing kit
Hawaii - key chain
Iowa - key chain
Michigan - photos from Fort Mackinac/Mackinac Island
Minnesota - 3M key chain and rock magnet
New Mexico - Route 66 postcard
North Dakota - postcard
Texas - mini license plate
West Virginia - road map
Wisconsin - state seal pin and small cheese wedge
We still need to collect many more things from many more states! Keep 'em coming! We will collect things from our cache on a regular basis.
**UPDATE**- Flat Stanley is currently in Ohio. Track him by clicking here
My students and I were recently featured in our local newspaper about our geocaching activities. Click here to read the article.
