CheckMark Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

camp637: [:O] Went out today on a recon mission ... sad to report that this cache apparently became a sacrifice to the conservation gods. Yes, the Lake County Forest Preserve District has been quite aggressive this past week or so in doing controlled burns in several areas of this park. And our cache -- and its log book and trading trinkets -- likely burned up in the conservation conflagration.Kind of a shame because from one parking place (if you chose the right lot and the correct paths) you could hunt three of our caches: this one and Exercism and Miles to Go.For anyone who's curious -- the name of this recently departed cache refers to the fact that it was hidden at the base of a tree that, from a distance, looked like a checkmark. Sadly, only part of the checkmark is still instact. Thanks to everyone who came out to hunt this cache -- it enjoyed a good though short run.

Geocache Description:

Chicago Geocaching

This is an offset cache. The co-ords above will bring you to a point where you must gather additional info to calculate the location of the actual container, which is a small ammo can. Depending on your chosen parking spot, the info-gathering point may be about halfway between your car and the cache.

In keeping with the name of this preserve, it seemed only fitting that geocachers indulge in some basic arithmetic exercises to compute the co-ords of the second/final stage.

To calculate the latitude for the cache: start with N42° 15.796; multiply the total number of words on line one and two of the plaque by the number of inches in a yard; add that result to the final three digits (796 plus your result).

To calculate the longitude for the cache: start with W087°55.635; multiply the total number of letters in all words on line one of the plaque by the number of weeks in a year; subtract that amount from the final three digits (635 less your result).

For those who are interested in how we arrived at the name of this cache, please read our welcome message on the first page of the logbook.

As for the ratings, we believe they are appropriate, assuming you don’t leave the path too soon.

In addition to a logbook and implements of written construction, the cache contains these trinkets for trading: bag of marbles, carbiner thingie, squishy snowman keyring, Mickey Mouse and Goofy magnets, Pocahontas stickers, eraser animal puzzle, farm animal kit (build a pig!), two unsharpened pencils, blunt-point scissors, flip book, birds of prey card set, and a tape measure.

Have fun and enjoy your caching adventure!
