Geocache Description:

The Lost City is a section of the Shawangunk Ridge in the Mohonk Preserve. It gets its name from an area of conglomerate outcrop that contains many crevices and fissures. The result is something reminiscent of an ancient abandoned cliff-face city. We thought this would be an excellent location for our very first cache.

This area is popular among rock climbers, but don't worry! You won't need climbing gear to find this cache. The Mohonk Preserve does charge an entry fee - consider a yearly membership to save money in the long run. This is one of our most favorite hiking areas, it really is a wonderful place with so many different trails and unique sights, it's worth visiting it again and again. We hope to place more caches here in the future. People come here from all over the world, especially rock climbers wanting to tackle the 'Gunks'.

The nearest parking to the cache is the Preserve's Coxing Entry lot at N41 44.916 W074 11.979. From there it is just over a half mile hike, take the High Peters Kill trail (blue) to the King's Lane trail (yellow). The trails are well maintained but steep in some places, and the last 100 feet or so to the cache require you to scramble over some boulders. Wear good hiking shoes and be careful on the rocks! The trail will take you almost to the cache, so please don't try to bushwhack long distances to get to it.

The satellite reception in this area isn't always the best, so if you find yourself stuck without signal in the immediate cache area, try standing at the 'end-of-trail' marker (three yellow splotches) on a tree at N41 44.916 W074 11.979. The cache is approximately 100 feet away bearing 345 degrees (just a little west of north). The cache itself is a well-stocked rubbermaid container. There are some hiking tools in there, a few silly items and toys, a couple of dollars - something for everyone. Please be sure to re-hide the cache well and don't forget to sign the log book. Please note that this cache is probably not going to be very easy to find if there's more than a just a dusting of snow on the ground.
