Geocache Description:

Four wheel drive recommended although recent county improvements have made the drive much easier than when the cache was first established.

This is a drive to do first thing in the morning when you see the sun is out, there are no/few clouds and the sky is clear..you can see all of Mauna Kea and no clouds are coming in toward Waimea; otherwise, this drive can be in the mist. Take a camera and picnic lunch.

We were out to the cache on 2/3/07 to make sure everything was there, it was. Saw a large owl swoop across the pasture; cattle are in the pastures and fun to drive by.
Weather was superb.

Drive out of Waimea town toward Hilo on the main highway, turn right on Mana Road. Drive down the road to the end, turn left, and head out. Watch out at first for runners, folks on ATV's and folks on horseback at the start of the road.

Look for birds..there are owls you may see swooping out and/or sitting on fence posts. Pueo is the name of the Hawaiian owl.

Signs will be posted and this is open range, and a public access road. There are NO LONGER gates to open and close, but you will go through cattle guards. You will see cattle and horses in the pasture along the way.

When you are almost at the coordinates, stop, park and get out of the four wheel drive. Be aware of and careful if cattle are near by.

Sights along the way or returning are views of Mauna Kea, Waimea, and Waipo Valley. This is a special and peaceful view of Hawai'i and Waimea you might not normally see.

If you are a history buff and/or interested in reading about this part of Hawaii Island, Dr. Billy Bergin's book Loyal to the Land, Vol. 2, highlights the history of Parker Ranch, this large area, and the personalities and paniolos that have lived/still live here. It's a great story.
