South Elkhorn Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

IronHorseReviewer: Greetings from Geocaching.com

It looks like your cache has been under the weather for some time. While
we feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block
other cachers from entering the area around this cache for a reasonable
amount of time, we can't do so forever. Therefore we are archiving this
cache so that someone else can place a cache in the area and geocachers
can once again enjoy visiting this location. If you haven't done so
already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

If you are in the process of replacing or repairing your cache please
e-mail me in response to this archival, and I will re-evaluate the
archival of your cache.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to
geocaching in the past and look forward to seeing your caches up and
running in the future.

Geocache Description:

** New Location ** The Cache is a small plastic container (Decon container) that contains a log book, pencil and small trade items.

South Elkhorn is a southern Fayette county community, now absorbed by the city of Lexington, located on South Elkhorn Creek at Harrodsburg Road (US 68) and Higbee Mill Road. It was the site of the first grist mill in the county in 1783. The South Elkhorn post office operated from 1871 to 1904.

The cache is near South Elkhorn Creek. This creek runs for 86 miles through Fayette, Scott, Woodford, and Franklin counties. It meets the Kentucky River in northern Franklin county. A branch of South Elkhorn Creek ran through downtown Lexington. The creek's directional flow was used to plot the direction of Main and other downtown streets.

If you have not been in this part of town lately you may be surprised at all of the construction that has taken place.

Parking: There is a gravel pull off on Bowmans Mill Road that would serve as a good out of the way parking spot and allow you to walk under Harrodsburg road.

** Do not try to access this cache from Harrodsburg road. When using the suggested approach, you will not be seen or in harms way from the excessive traffic.
