Geocache Description:

Ammo Can along the Spruce Knob Observation Tower Trail. This trail is the highest point in West Virginia.

This cache is just off the trail from the parking area to the observation tower. This walk is along the highest point in the State of WV. The parking area is paved but the roads into this area are gravel and will require a drive of about 20 miles from the paved highway. It is definitely worth the drive.

There are other caches in the area that make this a good caching day or weekend. Primitive camping is available at Spruce Knob Lake Campground.

This area is subject to high winds and severe weather but feature characteristics of a much more northern climate. Due to the stiff prevailing wind many of the red spruce trees for which the mountain is named, grow one sided. The branches gain length only on the downwind side.

This is a busy area. The cache is well sheltered from view but you may have to wait for a good moment to slip out of sight. This cache does not require any bushwhacking to get off the trail (you will see what I mean). The ecology is fragile up here so please keep to the trail and rocks. I designed this for zero impact.
