A Low Spot Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

twm3: The original cache was out in the open on a boulder's north side. No trails in the area so one had to be looking for the cache to be in the area.

Times have changed in the past 13 years, really 13 years. Many motorcycle trails in the area with the cache being muggled. Reluctantly I am archiving the cache as I couldn't find it today. Will check the area out again in the upcoming month but I am afraid that the low spot is still there but the Low Spot geocache is gone.

Until next time,
~twm3

Geocache Description:

Welcome to the lowest crossing of the Sierra. In this three stage cache, you are looking for the midpoint of the Western Pacific tunnel but up above on the ground. The coordinates given are for a benchmark that gives a good view of the eastern portal.

It shouldn't take more than 30 minutes to work out this cache. Watch your footing going down to the top of the Western Pacific tunnel Portals. The rails are still used but infrequently from what I understand.

When taking the coordinates of the portal, the proper location is at the top of the portal above the middle of the tracks.

The Beckworth Pass is the lowest crossing of the Sierra. If you are student of the Sierra history, you may ask why the Central Pacific railroad went over Donner Pass at nearly 7,000 feet versus this pass. While Donner Pass gets snowed in, this area gets some snow but not the show stoppers that Donner gets. Well it's because the engineers of the time didn't think it was possible to build a railroad through the Feather River canyon.

An excellent museum for the Western Pacific and other railroad may be found in Portola (visit link)

To find the cache (which is pretty much out in the open and clearly visible from the north), take the average of the coordinates you get from the middle of each tunnel portal entrance. The cache is a 50mm ammo box painted army green.

This cache should be able to be found during most winters.

This is the second in a series of railroad related caches.
