Geocache Description:

*** NOTE: I'VE TAKEN THE AMO BOX HOME FOR REPAIR AND BACKUP OF LOGS. GOOD NEWS IS, NO VANDALISM AS REPORTED BY THE GIRL SCOUNTS. THIS IS STILL A NICE PLACE TO VISIT, BUT DO NOT LOOK FOR THE CACHE *** -- Fishback

Placed on the occasion of Colonel Smut's* 70th birthday, born October 25, 1933. Civil War theme.

TIP: Stand in front of giant green " message box." (Anyone know what this thing is?) Take 23 paces South by Southeast to the heart of the Gnarly Tree. (Was a cool tree... Sadly most of it has been cut down 3/2008.) Standing on the heart of the Gnarly Tree, take 28 paces west (around fence) to location of cache.

This cache started out with Civil War relics (replicas) including:

  • C.S.A. Belt Buckles Uniform Buttons
  • Several denominations of C.S.A. currency
  • Postcard photos

If you have anything Civil War or Southern related, please feel free to swap! Otherwise enjoy a beautiful sunset or sunrise on the island.

*Smut is a childhood nickname given by Captain Bill.

[Update: 7/17/2007. There is a very close by benchmark. See this photo.]

[Update: 3/15/2008. We have reports the Gnarly Tree has been cut. Can someone post a photo in the gallery?]

[Update: 3/30/2008. We are sad to report that our father passed away on Good Friday, March 21, 2008, after a round of golf with two of his sons. Thanks to the hundreds of geocachers who posted here over the past 4 years. Our dad really enjoyed reading every post. He always loved a good treasure hunt.]
