Ditch riders were the canal inspectors who rode their horses along the canal finding and repairing leaks in the earthen channel. For almost 90 years, until pipes replaced it, the canal required daily inspections when water was in the ditch. My uncle was a ditch rider for a time. He rode his horse the length of the canal, about 7 miles, every morning for several years.
