Random Books Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Zinnware: This cache is definitely gone. With the recent extension of the trails in the park and the one-year anniversary of the merger between Penguin Random House, I plan to replace this cache with another one that is appropriate to the new name of the company. It was a great 10 1/2 year run for this cache.

Geocache Description:

Located in a park containing a nice pond, geese, and a small pretty waterfall.

This cache is in the Bennett Cerf park donated to the Carroll County by Random House, Inc. Bennett Cerf was one of the founders of Random House, the world's largest English-language general trade book publisher.

The company was founded in l925, when Bennett Cerf and Donald Klopfer purchased The Modern Library, reprints of classic works of literature, from publisher Horace Liveright. Two years later, in 1927, they decided to broaden their publishing activities, and the Random House colophon made its debut.

Bennett Cerf recounts how the company's name originated for the book publisher: “I’ve got the name for our publishing operation. We just said we were going to publish a few books on the side at random. Let’s call it Random House.” More information about the history of this company can be found at: (visit link)
