Geocache Description:

I Have Seen The Light!

Celebrating TWENTY-TWO YEARS in the same spot! 2003-2025.

The Cana Island lighthouse has been called the most photographed object in Door County. Thousands of visitors troop across the causway separating the island from the mainland. In years past, water would cover the path, making access to the island a matter of wading across slippery rock, but low lake levels in recent years make this a dry walk. The lighthouse tower itself is still a functioning navigational aid, and is therefore off limits, but the Door County Maritime Museum operates a small informational center, tours and gift shop in the attached keeper's house through the tourist season for a small fee. Their web page about the lighthouse can be viewed here.

This island itself is approx. 9.06 acres, so it is possible to visit this cache without ever setting eyes on the lighthouse itself by following the rock beach around the perimeter to the cache area. This way, you would most likely avoid the curious eyes of trolls, although the cache is, I believe, hidden well enough so cachers will avoid casual observation.

Despite the MANY signs by the Door County Maritime Museum claiming otherwise, you DON’T need to pay to visit this cache. Cana Island is a county park, and here is what Door County says:

Access and Hours of Operation:

The island, accessible by a short walk across a causeway, is open to the public a half-hour before sunrise till a half-hour after sunset.  The lighthouse and tower are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May through October.  A fee is charged to access the island which includes admission to the lighthouse and an additional fee is charged to climb the tower during hours of operation.

Here is what the Maritime Museum charges, if you wish to visit while they are open:

Adults – $12

Youth (5-17) – $10

Seniors & Veterans – $10

Children 4 & under – Free (There are age and height restrictions for children to safely climb the tower. They must be at least 5 years old and 42 inches tall.)
