Geocache Description:

Multi-Cache on a drumlin in North Sudbury. Moderate hike, mostly on trails.

NOTE: THIS AREA ABUTS SUDBURY CONSERVATION LAND WHICH ALLOWS HUNTING. IF OTHER CARS ARE AT PARKING AREA, ASSUME THEY ARE HUNTERS AND USE APPROPRIATE CAUTIONS.

“Over the Hill” is a four part multi cache located on what was once known as Fairbank Hill in Sudbury. The hill is now known by another name. This hill is an almost round drumlin, a smooth, streamlined hill composed of till left behind by the glaciers. The long axis of the hill is oriented in the direction of ice movement, with the blunt nose pointing upstream and the gentler slope trailing off downstream. That would indicate that this drumlin resulted from a northerly ice flow. In height, drumlins range from 8 to 60 m, averaging somewhat less than 30 m. At 27 meters (87 feet), this hill is an average height drumlin. What makes this drumlin somewhat unusual is that most drumlins are between 0.5 and 1 km in length with the length usually being several times width. The Fairbank drumlin is almost round with a width of about 600 meters and the length being only slightly longer.

You can park for this cache on Lincoln Rd. at N42° 23.853, W071° 22.800. Just past the gate there is a trail leading to the right which will take you in the direction of the first waypoint. At the top of the hill there is a clearing with a fire ring where local scouts and others enjoy campfires (Fires permitted ONLY if you register with SVT at 978-443-6300). At the edge of this clearing you will find a memorial bench at N42° 23.852 W071° 22.686 honoring a local naturalist, Richard A Forster. To find waypoint 2 of the multi-cache you will need to add the year of Mr. Forster’s birth (last three digits) to N42° 23.007, and add his age at death to W071° 22.675. Waypoints 2 and 3 are micro-cache film canisters containing a note with the next coordinates. The final cache is a metal ammo container 10”L x 3”W x 8”H.

In keeping with the naturalist theme of the memorial, please swap items associated with nature. There are also finders buttons.

Congratulations to G-O-Cashers and Revenge of the Den Leader for making a tandem claim on the First Finder Buttons.

This land is owned by Sudbury Valley Trustees and contains many good hiking trails. If you cross the road at N42° 23.988 W071° 22.527 you can continue hiking on the trails of the National Wildlife Refuge. A map and brocure of Round Hill can be downloaded at www.sudburyvalleytrustees.org
