Geocache Description:

An easy but lengthy (if you're walking) stroll through World War II history.

Your first step is to go to the coordinates ascribed to this cache. This is the site of a Second World War prisoner-of-war camp. The coordinates are at a cairn and plaque honouring the Veterans Guard of Canada, some of whom were the guards for the prisoners of war.

The Veterans Guard of Canada consisted of veterans of the First World War who were too old to be active participants in the Second World War. In addition to being POW guards, they also trained active service recruits and protected military installations, war plants, vital utilities and railroads against sabotage.

During 1945 and 1946, the prisoners of war from this camp cleared the trees for the construction of the Barrier Dam. Before that time, Barrier Lake did not exist.

At the cairn, make note of the following numbers, which you will use to calculate the coordinates of the final cache:
A: The number of the Seebe Internment Camp
B: The number of prisoners of war held in this camp – three digits
C: The number of the Lethbridge Internment Camp

Now, go to coordinates N51°01.743' W115°02.102', a few meters away. This is the location of “The Colonel’s Cabin”, which housed the internment camp commandant during the war. The cabin has a very distinctive doorknob, crafted by a German prisoner of war, from which you will note the following number:
D: The number of spokes in the doorknob

****Note - the doorknob is reported to be broken. See photo below for what it looked like originally. So, yeah, the photo is a bit of a spoiler....

OK, you are now ready to determine the coordinates of the final cache:

N51°01.XXX' W115°03.YYY'

Where XXX = (3 x A) + D + 40
And YYY = (2 x C) + B + 80

This is down the highway about 2.3 km away as the crow flies, or about 3 km with all the twists and turns. The cache is in a spot overlooking the startlingly beautiful robin’s-egg blue of Barrier Lake (see photos).

The cache is a peanut-butter-type jar containing logbook and an assortment of trinkets and pins and toys, including a "can you separate these two chunks of metal, and can you put them back together again" type of brain teaser.
