Don't let the cache title fool you. There's no disappointment or
deception involved in this geocache. (Unless you're unable to find
the cache!)
The cache is located near the summit of Mt. Deception, the peak
northwest of Mt. Disappointment in the Mt. Wilson area of the San
Gabriel Mountains.
To reach the peak, here is the most
straightforward route:
- The trailhead is off the Mount Wilson
cutoff .35 miles from Angeles Crest Highway at N34 15.263, W118
06.130. Parking is nearby at the Mt. Disappointment Fire Road
gate. Be sure to not block the gate. A Forest Service Adventure
Pass is required for parking
- Look for stairs in the cliff and a
somewhat steep start up. This trail is about 1.3 miles and
terminates at the fire road
- Turn right on the paved fire road and hike
down for a short distance until you reach the saddle between Mt.
Disappointment and Mt. Deception at N34 14.904, W118
06.595
- At the end of the guardrail, head west and
follow the ridge up to the summit. The initial climb is fairly
steep, but it is short. Once on the top it's basically flat with
little rises along the way
Continue straight along the footpath until
you reach a small rock cairn at N34 14.941, W118 06.883. You've now
reached the true summit of the mountain. You'll find the Sierra
Club Peak Log in the red can hidden in the cairn. Take a moment and
sign this log. At this point the cache is about 275 feet
away.
The cache container is a military decon
container, which is about 5" x 3" x 2" overall. It is camouflaged
to match its surroundings.
After finding the cache container,
please be sure the lid is on tight and place it back as you
found.
Have
fun!
