William H. Weeks designed this Queen Anne style house for Dr. H. C. Murphy in 1901. The sunburst design in the gable is suppose to be a symbol of optomism.
Dr. Murphy was a physician and community leader in Salinas from 1899 to 1935. He was the official physician for the city's California Rodeo.
John Steinbeck was delievered by Dr. Murphy in 1902 at the Steinbeck home a few blocks away.
Dr. Murphy's son, John was a writer and John Steinbeck acted as his mentor.
