In 1858, about 160 convicts from the Alton prison were brought to Joliet to supply the labor force to build a new prison. The new building was constructed on a 15-acre spot enclosed by quarried limestone walls 5 feet thick at the bottom, 2 feet thick at the top, and 25 feet high, with a series of guard towers.
Park in the parking lot at N 41 32.186 W 088 04.796. From here follow the bike trail until you are within a few hundred feet of the cache. As you approach the bend in the bile path, notice the large limestone walls that have held some of the world's worst criminals such as Richard Spec. There will be some bushwhacking needed to reach your goal the walk is roughly .5 miles each way. We have placed a nice new pair of Harley Davidson sunglasses as a first to find prize along with many other goodies.
