Geocache Description:

A nice, easy hike in an area that has made many important contributions to the agricultural community.

In the 1960's and 70's, we always referred to this place as the "Experimental Farm". Even though this conjures mental images of mutant animals, it's actually the birthplace of MUTANT FRUIT.

Over the years, this site has been instrumental in the creation of many tender fruit varieties, including the development of special varieties of peaches, plums, strawberries and, of course, grapes that were customized to grow better in the Niagara area.

Today, this facility is home to several government and university research and public liaison offices where they continue to aid the agricultural community.

There are several parking areas on the property, but, many are used mainly by the staff. The main public parking area can be found at: N 43° 11.384 / W 79° 23.761

The cache is a 2.2L Rubbermaid container, and is located approximately 500m from the main parking area.

While you are on site, please take time to explore the grounds, which feature some of the species that have been developed over the years. If the name starts with a "V", it was probably developed here in Vineland.

In order to reach the cache location, you will need to use this tunnel, which allows safe passage to the far side of the service road: N 43° 11.283 / W 79°

23.820 This cache is good for travellers, because it is close to the highway, with easy access from Victoria Avenue, in Vineland. Please do NOT attempt to access this cache directly from the highway, nor from the service road. That would be too dangerous, and the area is surrounded by fencing. Safe, free parking areas are available on site.

Other areas of (possible) interest in the immediate area: A large, irregularly shaped, walnut tree (near parking area): N 43° 11.403 / W 79° 23.731

In the spring and summer, this site is known for its beautiful gardens, and, some of you may recognize this bridge, as it is a very popular wedding photography spot. N 43° 11.348 / W 79° 23.754

Holey Maple Tree (too obvious to place a cache in here): N 43° 11.312 / W 79° 23.814

Christmas Holly Tree (near the cache): N 43° 11.221 / W 79° 23.908

Millennium Forest Project (north end of the property): N 43° 11.549 / W 79° 23.719

A good spot for shore-casting for trout in the spring (a short drive to the shore of Lake Ontario): N 43° 11.728 / W 79° 23.910
