Geocache Description:

This geo-cache is set in the beautiful setting of Bolton Abbey, the family home and grounds of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire.

There are two parts of this virtual cache, the firstly to find two trees, and note their oddity, and secondly risk yourself on the stepping stones across the river !

Primarily, however this is a superb walk….

The co-ordinates above are at the first tree, and below are listed the co-ordinates of the second tree and stepping stones.

Please note that to achieve this cache in full a 2 mile round walk is needed !

Parking is available in the Bolton Abbey grounds and I recommend you park in the Cavendish Pavilion car park (not the one near the abbey). Please note car park charges are £5.00 ! For those not wishing to pay see below.

From the Cavendish Pavilion cross the wooden footbridge and turn right, and head down the footpath heading south, towards the abbey. After the ford (footbridge available) take the footpath to the right through the trees marked Bolton Priory.

You will find at the first co-ordinates a large fallen tree. The first part of this cache is to e-mail me with its unique contents ! PLEASE NOTE that GPS signal is bad in the trees, but if you keep your eyes open, in reality you will not need the GPS.

The second tree is situated at N53 59.222 W 001 52.846. Again this is the same as the first tree (better GPS reception)

Continue along the path and drop down onto the stepping stones N53 59.010 W001 53.176.

This time note the number of steps. (I have started with the large stone on either end and discounted any stones beyond these). Hope you do not fall in ! Again e-mail me with your answer.

Free Parking !

From the A59 roundabout outside Bolton Abbey take the A59 signposted Harrogate. ¼ mile up the hill take a single track road with passing places to the left sign posted ‘Storiths’. After 1½ miles you drop down and cross a ford, continue for a short distance and you will come across the bridge referred to above. You are now opposite the Cavendish Pavilion. Parking is available on in small bays on the edge of the road. PARKING IS LIMITED. Do not try to attempt on a bank holiday. Even at 10.30 am on a Sunday morning in November, when I set this cache, it was busy.

Have a great walk. For those with more time, please explore the Abbey (its free), the Cavendish Pavilion has great snacks, and a superb gift shop (especially for Christmas decorations). Also try the walk through the trees in the opposite direction to Strid falls. Well worth a visit.
